Pondicherry Districts

The Union territory of Pondicherry encompasses an area of only 480 sq km with Pondicherry town and its villages covering 290 sq.km surrounded by the south Arcot District, Karaikal town and its villages covering 161 sq.km surrounded by Tanjavur district, Mahe and its villages covering 9 sq km surrounded by the Kerala state, and Yanam covering 20 sq.km within the East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh.
Pondicherry, the head quarters of the union territory, lies 162 km south of Madras and 22 km north of Cuddalore, Karaikal is about 150 km south of Pondicherry and Yanam about 840 km north-east of Pondicherry on the Andhra Coast. Mahe lies almost parallel to Pondicherry,653 km away on the west coast.

Pondicherry Legislative Assembly

The structure of the Pondicherry Legislature is Unicameral. The Legislative Assembly consists of 30 members. The people on the basis of adult franchise directly elect all the members. For those 30 , Legislative assembly lies near Bharathi Park in Victor Simone street. Chief minister's office , council of ministers and their principal secretaries office lies in the same building only.
For all other members office lie on another newly constructed building just behind the assembly.
In terms of the provisions of the Government of Union Territories Act, 1963 the normal tenure of the Assembly is five years, unless sooner dissolved. There are 16 Committees in the Assembly.

Raj Niwas

The Centre is represented by the Lt. Governor, who resides at the Raj Niwas at the Nehru Park, the former palace of the French Governor General of Pondichery. The Central government is more directly involved in the financial well-being of the territory, as against the states where financial administration, given a budgeted central grant is the responsibility to the state governments. Consequently, Pondicherry has at various times, enjoyed lower taxes, especially in the indirect category.
Raj Niwas (Hindi for Government Adobe) is the official residence of the Lieutenant Governors of Pondicherry. The present lieutenant governor of Pondicherry is Mukut Mithi.Once it was the official residence of the French Governor Dupleix.

The secretariat of pondicherry lies in Goubert Salai (beach road). Its a four storage white building contains all head of the departments office.All imporatant meetings will held in this building only. national information centre also present in this building. Peoples can contact those officials for any kind of information.

Bharath Sanchar Nigam Limited (telephone) office lie in the same road of raj niwas. Telegraphic office & City hrad post office lie exactly opposite to telephone office.
