Before you go :
Pack medicines in their original, clearly labelled containers. A signed and dated letter from your physician describibg your medical conditions and medications, including generic names. If you are a diabetis or BP patient please memorise your medicine names. you will be able to by many medications over the counter in pondicherry without a doctor's prescription.
Red Alert :If you take any regular medication , bring double your needs in case of loss or theft.

Health Insurance

Even if you are fit and healthy, don't travel without health insurance, even accidents to happen. If your health insurance doesn't cover you for medical expenses abroad, consider getting extra insurance. Find out in advance if your insurance plan will make payments directly to providers or reimburse you later for overseas health expenditures.
**You may prefer a policy that pays doctors or hospitals directly rather than you having to pay on the spot and claim later.

Mobile Phones
|

The advantages of bringing your own mobile phone to India are that local networks are reasonably cheap to use. In Pondicherry, you simply buy a mobile phone kit (Phone number & sim card) from any phone shop or other outlets, by producing your Passport xerox with one colour photo of yours.
The most famous networks in Pondicherry are Reliance, BSNL, Hutch, Airtel, Aircel and Tata Indicom. Recent days all service providers distributing their sim for free of cost. Just you have to fill with taltime and use it.

Phone Codes

To make a call to India from overseas dial the international access code of the country you're in India then 91 (International country code for India), then the area code (drop intial zero, this zero applies for call made within India) and then the local number.
To call a local landline number in pondicherry from your mobile means you have to dial the number with area code (0413 Pondicherry code eg : 04132292729).

Internet Access

|
Internet access are widespread in Pondicherry. You may browse for a hour at a minimum cost of Rs.10. It may vary upto Rs.25 according to the Internet Cafes speed (Mbps) & environment.
If you are thinking of travelling with a notebook or hand-held computer, be aware that your modem may not work in Pondicherry. The safest option is to by a reputable global modem before you leave home.

No Smoking

The Indian government has banned smoking in public places and prohibited all forms of tobacco advertising.The ban includes all government buildings and public transports, although does not cover snuff and chewing tobacco, which account for the bulk of tobacco consumption in india.
